Why do Catholics believe in purgatory?

Many catholic traditions were instituded by constantine when he legalized christianity. He wanted everyone on the same side so he adapted pagan rituals to christianity. And that's how we got the catholic church. There were christians before the catholic church, and many things catholics do are not biblical, in matter of fact some of them go against the bible, and are adapted from pagans.
