I don't quite get last rites?

In contemporary religious culture, do Yahoo users/ Christians still believe that last rites are meaningful? I'm talking specifically about like a combat soldier on a battlefield, not very religious but technically Christian. Shouldn't his lack of being faithful to Christianity have almost all bearing on his ascendancy to heaven or his success in purgatory?
